Rick Sheeley has been named the new General Manager of The Staunton Media Alliance, which operates Staunton’s first and only listener-powered community radio station, WQSV 106.3 FM. Rick will succeed Ben Leonard, who led the station for nearly six years and will retain his role as a DJ.

WQSV’s new ‘Native America’ show lifts up contemporary indigenous artists
Local radio station WQSV, 106.3, has a new show on the air lifting up the voices of Native America artists. ‘Native America’ plays contemporary native and indigenous music from all over North America. The show is hosted by M.E., who prefers to stay anonymous and let the music and the voices it holds up speak for themselves. “I’m keeping a low profile on it because I really want it to exist and I want it to exist outside of me,” explained M.E.

Local hip-hop, R&B artists in the spotlight on Tony Davenport’s WQSV radio show
Growing up in Staunton, Tony Davenport and his twin brother had a stereo in their bedroom. They wanted more than just the radio stations that were available in the area, so the two took metal coat hangers, attached them to the back of the stereo and stretched them out the window to the gutter. That allowed the two to listen to a station out of Richmond that played hip-hop and R&B.

New radio show shines spotlight on people behind downtown Staunton
In Staunton, a couple nonprofits are teaming up in a unique way to shine a spotlight on the people who make up downtown. The Staunton Downtown Development Association and WQSV are producing a radio show called Staunton Stories. “We’re not the only community that has an old train station or a Main Street, or sells tacos or candles you know,” said SDDA Executive Director Greg Beam. “It’s the people behind all of those businesses, behind all those logos and graphics and beautiful buildings.”

New radio podcast showcases Staunton businesses and nonprofits with SDDA, WQSV collaboration
When Greg Beam stepped into the role of executive director for the Staunton Downtown Development Association in 2019, he wanted to find ways to showcase what makes Staunton so special — the people behind the scenes. He had been kicking around the idea to host a type of show that would shed the spotlight on Staunton’s business and nonprofit community. He then reached out to Staunton’s independent radio station WQSV’s Ben Leonard to see how to make something like that possible.

In-person celebrations will be on-hold until it is considered safe to do so, but all at the station extends their appreciation to listeners and supporters, and invites everyone to tune-in and look forward to another five years.

Ben will succeed the station’s founder Tom DuMontier, who is leaving Staunton after more than 18 years to pursue a Masters of Divinity at The University Of The South in Sewanee, TN.
