Artist’s Statement I began as a plein(plane) air painter and enjoyed the process, but about fifteen years ago I moved toward a larger, bolder and more loose approach. This more abstract depictions, starting from sketches and simplified drawings gave me emotional freedom of color, rhythm and shapes. My tools can be brushes, palette knives, fingers, toes, pencils, anything that can leave a mark. I use layering to achieve texture and color and tone to follow the contour of the sky, mountains, water and pastures. Farm & Vineyard’s 5th Bi-annual Art Festival & Book Fair  Join the Wildlife Center of Virginia at Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyard’s 5th Bi-annual Art Festival & Book Fair on Saturday, October 3, in beautiful Keswick, Virginia. Guests will have the chance to mingle with a handful of the Center’s animal ambassadors and staff between 12-2 PM. Wildlife Center merchandise will also be available for purchase along with free handouts, coloring sheets, and wildlife-themed activities. Press Release for Rocktoberfest Rocktoberfest is coming to the Alpine Goat Brewery on October 31, from 11am to 3pm. The event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Rockingham County, benefits three local non-profit organizations: Rocktown House of Music, Rock Rotary Foundation, and Massanutten Regional Library. The event features three live bands: The Judy Chops, Trent Wagler and Eric Brubaker from the Steel Wheels, and a surprise band from the Rocktown House of Music! A journey into the American West on a search for traces of what was once a center of small-town life: the movie theater. Director Rustin Thompson travels 10,000 miles to visit over 100 rural movie theaters in 10 states in the West. He finds the physical remnants of what were once vibrant theaters, now gathering dust or repurposed as gyms, banks etc. He meets the theater owners struggling to keep movies on the big screen while fighting streaming, inflexible distributors, rising costs and many more obstacles to staying open.

Scotland Journey – Paintings by John M. Bell

“These paintings are from a series of works relating to my numerous travels in Scotland. My Bell family ancestors emigrated from the Borders of Scotland in the 1820s. I love the beauty, humanity, and history that are contained in the landscape, Neolithic sites, and stone structures of Scotland. In my acrylic and oil paintings, I seek to capture the powerful human and elemental presence that is still felt today. I am especially attracted to the more remote places in the Highlands and Isles.” John is a retired Professor of Art (Blue Ridge Community College, VA) who lives in Augusta County, Virginia. He earned his Master of Fine Arts (Painting and Drawing) from James Madison University and Bachelor of Arts (Studio Art) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has shown his works in over 60 solo, juried, and group exhibits throughout the U.S.A.
